Bottle Auction: A wonderful WESTERWALD SALTGLAZED STONEWARE GR TAVERN JUG, circa 1720 - 1730

A wonderful WESTERWALD SALTGLAZED STONEWARE GR TAVERN JUG, circa 1720 - 1730 Bottle Auction Description: An excellent condition Westerwald saltglazed stoneware GR jug with a fine applied frontal GR medallion between horizontal layers of checker pattern decoration; Westerwald region, Germany, circa 1720 - 1730. This beautiful, high-quality tavern jug has a central medallion with the monogram GR (Georgius Rex) surmounted by a large crown. Flanking the medallion are bands of checker pattern ornament with sinuous stylized foliage in between. There is an incised Number 3 capacity mark on the back of the jug which can be clearly seen in the photos. These beautiful jugs were exported in large quantities to other European countries including England, and from there many were shipped to the American Colonies. Their history is therefore inextricably linked to that of the early history of America. These historical links are outlined by Janine Skerry and Suzanne Findlen Hood in their work entitled Salt-Glazed Stoneware in Early America (Williamsburg, 2009) Chapter 2 and especially pp. 47 ff. They represent a wonderful field for the beginner-collector and fine examples can still be found. In addition, they are certainly appropriate decorative accessories for period furniture - especially because they were an article of daily use in 1700s America. This jug is about 8 7/8 inches tall. The base diameter is 3 1/4 inches. It is in great overall condition with only a few wear dings and a short faint hairline in the body and one in the handle. There is no restoration. This is a perfect example of Westerwald and a great addition to your personal collection or your dealer's inventory.Good luck and thanks for bidding!

Bottle Auction: THE BEST!! Magnificent WESTERWALD SALTGLAZED STONEWARE JUG, circa 1710

THE BEST!! Magnificent WESTERWALD SALTGLAZED STONEWARE JUG, circa 1710 Bottle Auction Description: A truly magnificent Westerwald saltglazed stoneware tavern jug with its original pewter lid; the body with magnificent sgraffito 'poppy seed' designs and related foliage colored in the most stunning cobalt blue; Germany, circa 1700 - 1720. This is one of the finest Westerwald pouring jugs technically-speaking and in terms of its overall condition, that we have had the pleasure of offering our dedicated Westerwald dealers and collectors and, believe me, we have had some fine examples over the years! This imposing beer jug is approximately 10 inches tall measuring to the top of the finial of the pewter lid. It has a fine bulbous shape and is magnificently potted and decorated with absolutely beautiful 'poppy head' designs in striking blue. Behind these are amazing 'psychedelic' foliage designs which, to continue the 80s metaphor, really blow your mind!!For Westerwald stonewares in an American Colonial context see the fascinating article by Janine Skerry and Suzanne Hood in Saltglazed Stoneware in Early America (Chapter 2: Emblems of Church and State) and also the fine trail-blazing work done by Ivor Noel Hume in his large and diverse output on 17th and 18th century saltglazed stoneware. The condition of this magnificent mug is absolutely wonderful with no chips, cracks or restoration and we believe this to be the original pewter lid which is an added bonus. You will simply not find a better example of early eighteenth century Westerwald than this and we commend it to anyone whether they are a seasoned collector or dealer or someone thinking of starting a collection.Good luck with your bid and please come and visit us again for the very best in English and American Colonial stoneware and saltglazed wares.

It does have some rainbow iridescence and appears to pretty much be scratch free with maybe one or two very minor. I have cleaned it with only warm soapy water, but it could be further cleaned to a bright luster if desired. It is also embossed on the backside of the bottle at the very bottom with C. G. CO. and on the bottom side with the number 32. It has a few minor manufacturer's flaws on the bottle, but pretty much a no problems bottle. It displays well and will certainly be a great addition to your collection of S.C. bottles.I DO COMBINE SHIPPING CHARGES ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES, SO PLEASE REQUEST AN INVOICE WHEN YOU ARE READY TO CHECKOUT. OTHERWISE INVOICES WILL BE SENT OUT ON SUNDAY AT THE AUCTION'S CLOSE. I WILL COMBINE SHIPPING FOR EACH THREE DAY AUCTION THAT WILL RUN FROM FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO A LISTING OR RELATED SUBJECT MATTER. GOOD LUCK AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO VIEW MY AUCTION LISTINGS.

Bottle Auction: A Fine 18th Century Dutch Onion Black Glass Wine Bottle, circa 1730

A Fine 18th Century Dutch Onion Black Glass Wine Bottle, circa 1730 Bottle Auction Description: A wonderful condition 18th Century Dutch black glass onion form wine bottle, circa 1700 - 1730. This free blown bottle is deep, dark olive green in color. The shape is a wonderful fat 'squat onion' form, the shape we all look for. It has a high cone shape kicked up underside; a sharp, circular pontil scar; and a tapering neck with an applied overlapping string rim. Typically, these early wine bottles have minor cracks or chips. The condition of this bottle is outstanding! There are no cracks, chips or dings, This is a KEEPER! If you are looking for a distinguished, unpolished, and legitimate early 18th century wine bottle, they don't get any better. Height of the bottle is approximately 6 1/2 inches and the body diameter is 5 3/4 inches. For further information see Roger Dumbrell, Understanding Antique Wine Bottles, 1983, p. 136. This bottle will make a wonderful early 18th century decorative accessory, a decanter for actual use in serving wine, or a highlight addition to your dealer inventory. Still has cork in the mouth of bottle. On May-01-16 at 16:51:26 PDT, seller added the following information:I have had a number of inquires to which model is this barrel - will people was asking if the "O" in the embossing of Ohio was under the "R" of bitters which would make it a R-75 or if the "O" in Ohio was under the "E" of bitters would make it a R-73. In this case it is the 1st a R-75, in Carlyn Rings book their is 3 variations and this one is the RARIEST of the three and listed as "RARE.
